Answers to the most common questions we receive about setting up sub-domains on your website.

1. What are sub-domains? - Top

Sub-domains allow you to create second-level domain names under your primary domain name. Sub-domains come in the syntax of anything.yourdomain.com, replacing "www" with with a different sub-domain prefix. Each sub-domain created can point to a different directoy within your account. This directory becomes the Document Root for your sub-domain.

For Example:

Each sub-domain has its own Document Root, where the files reside for that particular sub-domain. Just as your primary domain has its Document Root in the "/htdocs" directory, a sub-domain has a Document Root as well. (ie; /htdocs/sub-domain document root)

It is important to understand that the sub-domain prefix (in the case of chat.yourdomain.com, the prefix is "chat") is also the directory of the Document Root. Going back to the example of chat.yourdomain.com, the Document Root would be the directory "chat" in under your htdocs directory. The Document Root is automatically created when the sub-domain is setup through your Client Control Panel.

Deleting your sub-domain from Domain Manager will cause the sub-domain to not work, though we will not delete the directory or it's contents from your account. You should do this via FTP.

All sub-domains are setup through Domain Manager in your Client Control Panel and are updated once every 10 minutes.
